Effect of mask type setting in ResMed APAP

One of the settings for the ResMed series (AirCurve 10 VAuto in my case) is for the type of mask: Pillows, Nasal, Full Face. Does anyone know how this setting affects the way the machine operates? Specifically, what happens differently if using a pillows mask and the machine is set for Full Face instead? Or vice-versa? And how does this change affect therapy?

Thanks!

RE: Effect of mask type setting in ResMed APAP

There are threetrains of thought on this and very little real information out there, it's also not recorded in the machines Data, but here's my take on it and please be aware I could be wrong.
1. It's a 'Compensation' to the Leak calculation performed by the Machine, between inhalation and exhalation pressure, asall mask types have different parameters.
2. It's to do with 'Compensation' between different flow rates between Mask types.
3. I don't know.

RE: Effect of mask type setting in ResMed APAP

Talking with LSAT on another forum, and he said that the mask type affected only the leak calculation. I have been using the F&P Micro Nova for several weeks, and it turns out I had a week with the mask type set to Full Face and a week with it set to Pillows. When I look at OSCAR, the graphs show more leaks with the Pillows setting than with the Full Face setting. So it seems that the Pillows setting results in more sensitive leak detection and reporting. Leaks are negligible in either case.

Guy,

Do you notice a difference in comfort between the two settings? Just curious, did it feel like too much air with a full face setting?

do you use lower pressures when using nasal pillows? how much lower?

Apnea (80-100%) 10 seconds, Hypopnea (50-80%) 10 seconds, Flow Limits (0-50%) not timed

RE: Effect of mask type setting in ResMed APAP

No, I didn't notice any difference between the two settings. But the mask was new to me, so I might not have noticed a subtle difference. I'll switch back to Full Face setting and see if I can tell any difference.

RE: Effect of mask type setting in ResMed APAP

I have attempted to contact F&P and ResMed concerning AirSense 10 settings of pillow/nasal/full face after switching to the Evora hybrid and F40 hybrid masks. The F40's instructions say to use the pillows setting for the full face mask. I wondered if the Evora FF should also be set to pillows since it is a very similar mask. F&P did not know, and as usual, I cannot contact ResMed in theU.S.A. or Australia. So I experimented.

A fellow CPAP user suggested pillows/nasal/full face may have to do with the volume of the mask. Since Evora is close to F40 in volumethey felt pillows should be used. I do not know if the settings are to accommodatedifferences in maskvolumes but thatsounds plausible.

LankyLefty did a video on mask-typesettings. He does not know what the settings do either.

I feelhigherpressure usingthe pillows setting and an F40 mask. Ichanged themask setting just two days agotofull facefrom pillows. AHI went dramatically down from over 6 to less than 1. I also turned off EPR which may be the reason for the lower AHI, not the mask setting.

When I try to use the ResMedmessaging section on theirwebsite it has failedfor a few years. ResMed says to contact your DME for questions. My DME and MDknow verylittle about PAP therapyand do not know what mask settings change in machine function.

Does anyone here at ApneaBoard have the ability to contact ResMed to get informationexplaining howmask settings change the function of the AirSense 10?

I only give suggestions from experience as a fellow CPAP user, not professional advice.
